Another Tyranny Fighter reviews the Julian Heicklen Chronicles

"I knew Heicklen: even got arrested with him in LA once!"

That re-introduction from a John R. Burton email sent the author scurrying off into his Article Archives Folder. The original article in Libertarian News Examiner dated April 19, 2011 described how John was photographing Julian distributing Jury Rights pamphlets outside the Los Angeles Municipal County Courthouse when deputies arrested and handcuffed both of them for violating a judge's order "prohibiting the distribution of literature with the threat of a contempt of court charge."

What happened next was ... well ... you can find out in Chapter 61 of Tyranny Fighters: The Julian Heicklen Chronicles and read about all of the many other illegal Police State confrontations, harassments, assaults, arrests and abuses suffered by Julian and many of his stalwart Tyranny Fighters like John Burton.

John Burton's Amazon review:

By John Burton on January 27, 2016

In full disclosure, I have a horse in this race because I am mentioned in the book and was a Tyranny Fighter too. That said, this book chronicles the worthy and important struggle that was led by Julian Heicklen, between 2009 & 2012, and which, by way of bringing the man himself to the attention of those who have never heard of him, and celebrating his selfless contributions, might also serve to awaken the reader to some of the egregious abuses of our legal system (or to reinforce his suspicions)! It might even make the reader mad. Yes, this story needed to be told— and though Julian’s campaign, with all its implications, cries out for fuller treatment, Garry’s account is intended only as a chronicle of events, rather than a biography or manifesto, and in that regard it succeeds. The forward progress takes place via a compilation of articles, or accounts, originally appearing in the author’s own Libertarian News Examiner, at the time the event unfolded, represented chronologically here, but introduced with contemporary comments. For that reason much of the information is necessarily repeated, though there is still plenty of new information to keep ones passions hot. One suggestion I have is that in future editions I would like to see more contrast between the introductory remarks and the reproduced articles. Perhaps merely boldening the type-face of the introductory remarks would do it.

Former Tyranny Fighter reviews Julian Heicklen Chronicles

In 2010 Tyranny Fighter George Donnelly was attacked by a group of law enforcers with god complexes who bodily rode him to the ground, seized his camera, arrested him and had him jailed and prosecuted because he was peacefully recording Julian Heicklen distributing jury nullification brochures on a public sidewalk.

His story, along with others victimized by the legal establishment, is detailed in Tyranny Fighters: The Julian Heicklen Chronicles (Chapter 14).

George Donnelly and Julian Heicklen together in 2010 during their Tyranny Fighter days.

Today George writes "often dystopian, frequently heroic and always engrossing" science fiction novels. He recently took time to review my Tyranny Fighters book and post it on my Amazon page.

This review is from: Tyranny Fighters: The Julian Heicklen Chronicles
(Kindle Edition)

The power of one man doing something courageous and useful, and committing to doing it not just once but over and over again. That's what impresses me about this chronicle.

Just reading Heicklen's straight-talking accounts fills me with the a passion to follow his example. It was that passion that motivated myself and others in the Spring of 2010 to work with him.

Some parts of Reed's account are very absorbing. At times, the author is quite passionate and intelligent.

There are a few inaccuracies, including the claim that the Tyranny Fighters is an organization. It was just a mailing list for me. and 95% of the people on the list were just spectators. They didn't participate.

I expected this to be a story-ified account, perhaps with original content from interviews melded into a coherent story.

There were some typos. It was repetitive at time. I would have liked it to be more fleshed out.

But the mere act of documenting these unique incidents is quite valuable. Kudos to the author for all of his hard work.

I received a complimentary copy of the book.

Courtroom lawyer reviews Tyranny Fighters

Timothy J Taylor has been a courtroom lawyer since 1971 and is author of the book Authority!: Implications of consciousness and the reality of existence. Taylor also expresses his opinions on current events in his AUTHORITY! blog in which he emphatically states, "Conventional collectivist created authority is a deception in consciousness. You are your own Authority!"

Taylor has repeatedly expressed his support of jury nullification advocate Julian Heicklen over the years, most notably in his post Julian Heicklen: My Hero.

Taylor was even quoted in the book Tyranny Fighters: The Julian Heicklen Chronicles:

...courtroom lawyer Timothy J. Taylor, writing in his "Authority" blogspot, sums up Heicklen's "jury tampering" charges simply and rationally: "Any fair judge would have tossed the prosecutor's case out of court long ago."

After reading Tyranny Fighters: The Julian Heicklen Chronicles Taylor produced this book review:

Tyranny Fighters Review

by Timothy J. Taylor

Garry Reed's book, Tyranny Fighters, provides a riveting chronological account of libertarian freedom fighter, Dr. Julian P. Heicklen's years long freedom of speech battle with the American police state Authority to inform prospective jurors of their legal rights. In the process of merely exercising his First Amendment rights Dr. Heicklen was wrongly arrested numerous times, dragged and confined to mental hospitals against his will, jailed, bullied, tortured, and charged with bogus criminal offenses.

This gentle and humble man violated no laws. He committed no crimes. He is innocent. He's the victim of a vicious persecution by evil government agents of American Authority! As I predicted in my blog, a federal judge in New York City finally ordered the dismissal of a criminal "jury tampering" indictment against the frail octogenarian professor based on merely passing out leaflets in a public place advocating jury nullification.

For centuries in British and American Jurisprudence, if a jury concludes that something about a case against the accused stinks, it has the power to disregard the evidence and/or refuse to apply the law as instructed by the judge. Jurors may not be compelled to account for their verdicts. Their deliberations are conducted in secret and their conclusions need not be explained.

This is known as "jury nullification" and Dr. Heicklen enjoyed a First Amendment right to inform prospective jurors of that power despite the fact that the Authority doesn't want jurors to know about the awesome powers they possess.

This excellent book tells the whole story. It explains in copious detail exactly why Julian Heicklen is my hero. And now he's been vindicated at last.

The New York Times and Julian Heicklen

Do you know Dr. Julian Heicklen? Have you heard of him? Are you aware of all that he has done for your liberties, your freedoms, your rights?

You may not think it's worth your time to pick up a book called Tyranny Fighters: the Julian Heicklen Chronicles and read about this remarkable man but The New York Times certainly thought he was important when he was fighting for your jury nullification rights in 2011. They wrote several articles about him. Here's a link to one:

James Leynse for The New York Times

Julian was also featured in articles by The Wall Street Journal, The Economist, Harper's Magazine, Fox News, Dallas Morning News, Orlando Sentinel, Reuters, Reason, and The Heritage Foundation. He was interviewed in 2014 by CopBlock and written about in many other blogs and periodicals.

In 2012 freedom activist Ernest Hancock noted, "If you fight for a cause, almost anyone can change the world. It takes personal discomfort, confrontation, and persistence. It does not happen fast. Usually it takes a generation, and sometimes maybe longer. You do not convince the present generation. It is the following generation that you hope to reach."

It's time for all generations to learn the full story behind this 80+-year-old retired Penn State chemistry professor who one reader called "an outstanding genuine latter-day hero."

Julian Heicklen has established a legacy that all freedom activists should know. You can learn his story here:

Jury Rights Day 2015 and the Tyranny Fighters

Every September 5 the people at the Fully Informed Jury Association (FIJA) ask all Americans to pause and honor one of their most important human rights by rediscovering and reclaiming their rights and responsibilities as jurors.

Julian Heicklen harassed by law enforcers on public property in front of an American courthouse: A search for justice by citizens vs. a search for power by the legal establishment.

This year I'm reminding people of Julian Heicklen who should be one of today's most celebrated jury rights advocates along with his fellow Tyranny Fighters who repeatedly confronted America's police state in an attempt to reintroduce the concept of jury nullification into our society.

The complete article "Jury Rights Day and the TyrannyFighters" appears in the Libertarian News Examiner column I write for examiner.com.

Julian's Jailhouse Journal

In June 2010 I posted excerpts of Julian's Jailhouse Journal in Libertarian News Examiner after Julian was released from Rikers Island and made it available to all of his Tyranny Fighters. Here is that article:

Julian's Jailhouse Journal: Police State USA
June 17, 2010
10:43 AM MST

News from the liberterrain…

Seventy-eight year old veteran libertarian, Fully Informed Jury Association activist and indefatigable freedom campaigner Julian Heicklen released his jailhouse journal to his fellow Tyranny Fighters on Tuesday.

Heicklen was arrested on May 25 for committing the crime of standing on public property in front of the US District Courthouse in Manhattan while peacefully giving jury rights information to individuals, sent to jail for 18 Days in New York City's notorious Rikers Island, and then released "in the interest of justice."

Following are just a few outtakes from his journal. Anyone who finds these entries disturbing, disgusting, outrageous and inexcusable should read his entire journal.

"The handcuffs were removed. A number of capillaries had been broken in my wrists. My hands turned blue."

"I was physically and verbally abused during these drags. My upper arms were crushed in their hands, and blood vessels broken. This was painful. My upper arms turned blue. My sneakers had no shoelaces, so my toes kept smashing into the front of the sneakers breaking blood vessels in my toes. This was unpleasant to say the least. My toes turned blue, and did not return to normal for two weeks."

"The nurses and doctors pounded on my chest and pinched my fingers, which was quite painful, but I would not utter a sound. Then they sodomized me by shoving a needle up my rectum. Presumably they were looking for drugs (or bombs)."

"I objected vociferously, but the attendants pinned me to the floor while the doctor gave me an injection in my buttocks. Presumably this was a thorazine shot. I passed out."

"The toilet had overflowed, so there was urine and feces on the floor. I got very little sleep in these pens, because I did not have room to lie down and my old body would ache in the sitting position."

"The toilet did not flush, so feces and urine accumulated in the toilet."

"However the NY City police officer who had to drag me up and down stairs in the courthouse was more articulate. Every few minutes, he would say: 'You worthless piece of sh*t," apparently directed at me.

Heicklen, blessedly, is not without a sense of humor:

"On Sunday at 6:00 am some guy got a razor and cut up my face pretty severely. That guy was me. It was my first shave since I left home the previous Tuesday morning."

Now everyone can read JULIAN'S JAILHOUSE JOURNAL in Tyranny Fighters: The Julian Heicklen Chronicles where it's published in its entirety as a Special Bonus Chapter.
