Jury Rights Day 2015 and the Tyranny Fighters

Every September 5 the people at the Fully Informed Jury Association (FIJA) ask all Americans to pause and honor one of their most important human rights by rediscovering and reclaiming their rights and responsibilities as jurors.

Julian Heicklen harassed by law enforcers on public property in front of an American courthouse: A search for justice by citizens vs. a search for power by the legal establishment.

This year I'm reminding people of Julian Heicklen who should be one of today's most celebrated jury rights advocates along with his fellow Tyranny Fighters who repeatedly confronted America's police state in an attempt to reintroduce the concept of jury nullification into our society.

Julian's Jailhouse Journal

In June 2010 I posted excerpts of Julian's Jailhouse Journal in Libertarian News Examiner after Julian was released from Rikers Island and made it available to all of his Tyranny Fighters. Here is that article:

News from the liberterrain…

Seventy-eight year old veteran libertarian, Fully Informed Jury Association activist and indefatigable freedom campaigner Julian Heicklen released his jailhouse journal to his fellow Tyranny Fighters on Tuesday.

Heicklen was arrested on May 25 for committing the crime of standing on public property in front of the US District Courthouse in Manhattan while peacefully giving jury rights information to individuals, sent to jail for 18 Days in New York City's notorious Rikers Island, and then released "in the interest of justice."

Following are just a few outtakes from his journal. Anyone who finds these entries disturbing, disgusting, outrageous and inexcusable should read his entire journal.

"The handcuffs were removed. A number of capillaries had been broken in my wrists. My hands turned blue."

"I was physically and verbally abused during these drags. My upper arms were crushed in their hands, and blood vessels broken. This was painful. My upper arms turned blue. My sneakers had no shoelaces, so my toes kept smashing into the front of the sneakers breaking blood vessels in my toes. This was unpleasant to say the least. My toes turned blue, and did not return to normal for two weeks."

"The nurses and doctors pounded on my chest and pinched my fingers, which was quite painful, but I would not utter a sound. Then they sodomized me by shoving a needle up my rectum. Presumably they were looking for drugs (or bombs)."

"I objected vociferously, but the attendants pinned me to the floor while the doctor gave me an injection in my buttocks. Presumably this was a thorazine shot. I passed out."

"The toilet had overflowed, so there was urine and feces on the floor. I got very little sleep in these pens, because I did not have room to lie down and my old body would ache in the sitting position."

"The toilet did not flush, so feces and urine accumulated in the toilet."

"However the NY City police officer who had to drag me up and down stairs in the courthouse was more articulate. Every few minutes, he would say: 'You worthless piece of sh*t," apparently directed at me.

Heicklen, blessedly, is not without a sense of humor:

"On Sunday at 6:00 am some guy got a razor and cut up my face pretty severely. That guy was me. It was my first shave since I left home the previous Tuesday morning."

Judge Nap's rousing defense of Tyranny Fighter Julian Heicklen

Julian Heicklen was indicted on a bogus charge of "jury tampering" in 2011 for the act of standing on a public sidewalk in front of the federal courthouse in Manhattan and handing jury nullification information to randomly passing citizens.

When Judge Andrew Napolitano heard about this he vigorously defended Julian on his Fox News Freedom Watch show with statements like "This act is protected by the First Amendment to the Constitution" and "This charge is a farce!"

Book review NOT about Tyranny Fighters

Is there really "no such thing as bad publicity?" I knew what to expect when I asked Glenn Conley to review Tyranny Fighters: Profoundly repulsive profanity. That's because, true to form, Glenn Conley's review was not about Tyranny Fighters; all of Glenn Conley's reviews are always about Glenn Conley.

WARNING: If you have a weak stomach hold your nose and keep your eyes firmly closed while reading Conley's venomously vulgar "reviews." You've been warned.

The crude-lewd-rude review caricature that he consciously created for himself is just an attention-getting gimmick. I skimmed his book Glenn Hates Books and every one of his over 100 "reviews" are nothing more than jumping-off points to display his grotesquely nasty profanity, like a peacock flaunting its tail feathers.

So I did him the favor of writing my own review of him for Libertarian News Examiner. All of this is explained in "Glenn Hates Books: Reviewing the vulgo reviewer" (including the word "vulgo" if you follow the link in the article.)

When I asked Conley to review Tyranny Fighters I was hoping beyond hope to uncover a smidgen of intellectual depth from him. But not a chance. He won't step out of his XXX Adult Video Store character in public. So you'll learn nothing about my book from him. You'll have to do that on your own. Free Tyranny Fighters excerpt on Goodreads

This is another free excerpt from Tyranny Fighters: The Julian Heicklen Chronicles, this time posted on the Goodreads Group appropriately named Book Excerpts.

This excerpt is from Chapter 3 which graphically describes one of Julian's earliest illegal arrests and transport to a psychiatric ward of a New York hospital for having committed the "crime" of actually attempting to exercise his First Amendment right of Freedom of Association by standing on a public sidewalk and his Freedom of Speech by distributing literature to others who voluntarily chose to accept it.

Have you met the Tyranny Fighter Julian Heicklen?

This is one of Julian's earliest known video interviews, recorded by a supporter called "bile" on September 11, 2009 during Julian's fourth trip to the federal courthouse in Manhattan where he was illegally prevented from distributing Fully Informed Jury Association pamphlets to citizens on public property.

 

Now you can read his full story, how he began, how he inspired a thousand-strong following called Tyranny Fighters, how he and many of them were confronted, harassed, heckled, abused, arrested and jailed for committing the "crime" of exercising their First Amendment rights on public property.

Even the interviewer "bile" himself was later prevented from recording, had the video card from his camera illegally seized, and sued the Department of Homeland Security with ACLU assistance.
